Xenia Bluhm - BEIJING

Beijing, China - March 2014
camera: Holga || film: DM Goldparadies - 400 ASA

With her small, plain and sometimes unpredictable Holga camera, Xenia tries to capture mundane situations in foreign countries. It’s all about capturing that one tiny little fracture in time that radiates everything about the mood, the light and the magic of that specific motive she encountered. For Xenia, it’s all about freezing those moments and memories and being able to take them back and share with others.

The photo series BEIJING is a mix of black and white and color pictures and shows the contrast between the colorful street life of the Chinese capital, its beautiful parks and temples (all photos taken on color film), that are proof of the vast cultural history of the city, as well as the contrasting metropolis of Beijing – in which even modern skyscrapers dissolve into nothingness in the ever-consuming smog that is produced by coal furnaces and cars alike.

The choice of the right film and the proper equipment before a pictures is taken, are key factors. It’s what I love about analogue photography – like in my BEIJING series, where I chose to ban the smog of the city on a gritty black and white film. That choice can never be taken back by the click of a button. But this finality that is attached on those photos is what truly makes them meaningful and unique.
